Els takes PGA by four

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Sunday 7.30pm.

Ernie Els shot a four-under-par final round of 68 on Sunday to win the Alfred Dunhill PGA Championship in Johannesburg, the opening event of the European Tour, by four strokes.

Els finished at 273, 15-under-par, for his third PGA title. Fellow South African Richard Kaplan was second on 277 after closing with a round of 70.

As play began on Sunday, Kaplan was only two strokes behind Els, but fell back after Els came out strong on the first hole. Els’ determination was evident on his opening drive, and Kaplan’s mutterings Saturday about not being intimidated lost all relevance.

Initmidated or not, Kaplan admits he doesn’t have Els’ raw talent or skills, and as promised, Els short game was steadier and more confident Sunday.

England’s Steve Webster shared third place on 280 with three others after shooting a 70. South African David Frost, with a closing 66, Jeev Milkha Singh of India (70) and Australian Stephen Leaney (69) finished level with Webster.–AFP
