CAMEROON CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS

THE Cameroonian national football championship began in various parts of the country on Saturday. In Douala, Union Sportive de Douala beat Bamenda Free Boys 4-0 and Port FC won 2-0 against Badjoun Stadium, while in Yaounde, hosts Tonnerre Kalara Club (TKC) drew with Baham (2-2). In Ngaoundere, Canon de Yaounde, which will play in this year’s Confederation of African Football (Caf) Cup, defeated the local Girondins team 1-0. In Bafoussam (western Cameroon) Douala’s Dynamo, which will contest this season’s African Winners Cup, lost 3-0 to Sable de Batie, a local club. But Garoua Cotonsport, double national champions in 1997 and 1998, lived up to their reputation by defeating Kumbo Strikers at home (2-0). Another local team, Bafoussam Racing, also defeated 2-0 Aigle de Nkongsamba, which came back into first division after two years in second division. The club Panthere de Bangangte beat Olympique de Mvolie 1-0 in a game also played in Bafoussam.
