THE chairman of a private Zambian airline David Torkoph who was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) on Tuesday, has reportedly fled the country for Harare. The Zambian newspaper The Post reported on Friday that DEC spokesperson Mukutulu Sinyani, who confirmed that Torkoph was detained, said he was not aware that Torkoph had left the country. However, staff at Torkoph’s Aero Zambia say that he flew out of the country on Thursday in a company Boeing 737. “It was not a scheduled flight. He just rounded up pilots and some cabin attendants and took off for Harare,” a porter told The Post. Torkoph has been linked to allegations of gunrunning to Angola’s Unita rebels.
