LAST CHANCE TO REGISTER

THE Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) warned voters on Tuesday that this weekend’s registration drive would be their last chance to get their names on the voters’ roll for the upcoming general election. “All eligible voters who do not register on March 5, 6 and 7 will effectively disenfranchise themselves,” the IEC said in a statement issued at a media briefing in Pretoria. Almost 15-million or 55,6% of the country’s 26960217 potential voters put their names on the roll in earlier registration campaigns in November and December last year and in January this year. Chief electoral officer Mandla Mchunu urged voters who had already registered to check that their names are on the interim voting list. Members of the public can telephone the IEC’s tollfree information line 0800-11-8000, or visit their voting station or check on the IEC’s website, www.elections.org.za to check whether they are properly registered or to locate their voting stations.
