ANC WANTS POWELL CHARGED

THE African National Congress in KwaZulu-Natal says it will call for charges to be laid against senior Inkatha Freedom Party official Philip Powell for gunrunning. The announcement follows the surprise confirmation on Tuesday by IFP leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi that Powell had collected six truck loads of weapons from the Vlakplaas police hit squad in 1993. The allegations were made on several occasions since 1993, most recently during the trial of former Vlakplaas commander Eugene de Kock, who claimed he handed weapons over to Powell. The claims had been consistently denied by Buthelezi, Powell and the IFP. KwaZulu-Natal ANC chair S’bu Ndebele said on Thursday his party will send a memorandum to police commissioner, George Fivaz, and National Director of Public Prosecutions, Bulelani Ngcuka, to press charges against Powell and those who ordered him to obtain the weapons.
