CALL FOR NIGERIAN GENERAL STRIKE

THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the main trade unions federation, has ordered a general strike next week over payment of a new minimum wage, a press report said Thursday. NLC president Adams Oshiomhole asked private sector workers to join their colleagues in the public sector on May 6 for a general strike, the independent Nigerian Tribune reported in Lagos. The public sector strike was launched in 24 of Nigeria’s 36 states to press a demand for payment of the new monthly minimum of 3,000 naira (33 dollars) agreed in March. Oshiomhole said the ongoing strike would ensure quick implementation of the wage agreement. On Monday, the NLC leader said the strike would not hinder the military’s exit next month. The soldiers are expected to relinquish power on May 29 after 15 years of uninterrupted military rule.
