POLICE said on Sunday that they suspect a political motive for the murder of an African National Congress election worker in Soweto at the weekend. Police spokesman Inspector John Shiburi said Simon Ngubane (47) was on Saturday found dead in his car with two bullet wounds in the right eye and another in the back of his head. Shiburi said information gathered by police at the scene suggested that Ngubane’s death was politically motivated, but declined to elaborate. The ANC’s Safety and Security spokeswoman for Gauteng province, Delca Maluleke, blamed the murder on the United Democratic Movement, saying it has for some time been trying to “take over” the Motswaledi squatter camp where Ngubane was shot.
