Arendse out of squad

SOUTH AFRICAN goalkeeper Andre Arendse has been ruled out of the squad for the World Cup after undergoing surgery to repair torn knee cartilage.

Arendse, who plays for Fulham in England was injured during shooting practice on Monday after falling awkwardly when saving a shot, and was admitted to hospital on Tuesday for surgery.

Arendse (31) was part of the 1996 African Nations Cup champion’s squad, but was dropped from the squad last year when former coach Clive Barker resigned.

Supersport United goalkeeper Paul Evans has been called up to take over Arendse’s position as third-choice ‘keeper behind Hans Vonk and Brian Baloyi.

Arendse said, “I’m gutted, but Paul will do a superb job for the team.” South Africa play France in Marseilles on Friday.
