Chiefs broadside Pirates

SUNDAY 8.00PM:

KAIZER Chiefs beat Orlando Pirates 2-0 to win the Iwisa Charity Spectacular for a record eighth time at the FNB Stadium in Johanesburg on Saturday.

The match was not brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, but it did show some weaknesses in the Pirates squad that will play Mamelodi Sundowns in the final of the BobSave Superbowl on Saturday.

Pirates dominated most of the match, but a lack of finishing cost them the match. The half-time score was 0-0.

Chiefs made an inspired replacement in the second half when they brought on Isaac Kungoane for Marc Batchelor. Doctor Khumalo then moved to striker, causing the game to flow much more freely than it did before.

Kungoane scored Chiefs’ first goal when he received from Robson Muchichwa, who beat three defenders with great running skills. Chiefs put the issue beyond doubt in the 85th minute when Muchichwa scored from a pass by Nigerian Wasui Ipaye, giving Pirates keeper William Okpara no chance.

In the first semifinal Chiefs beat Jomo Cosmos 8-7 on penalties. The match was deadlocked at 2-2 when the final whistle blew.

The second semifinal was also decided by way of penalties when Pirates and Sundowns drew 1-1 at full time. Pirates ran out 5-4 victors on penalties.
