ALGERIAN LEADS CONGO PEACE MONITORS

THE Organisation of African Unity has appointed an Algerian army general to head a joint military commission to monitor a ceasefire in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a Zambian cabinet minister said on Thursday. The minister in the Zambian president’s office, Eric Silwamba, told state radio that the appointment was made by OAU Secretary General Salim Ahmed Salim. The Algerian military officer, whose name has been withheld, is expected to travel to Zambia on Saturday for a briefing on the joint military commission, which was officially established this week by the six countries involved in the DRC war. Rebels, who have not yet signed the ceasefire accord and were absent from this week’s meeting, are also expected in Zambia for a similar briefing, according to Silwamba.
