NIGERIA’S SPEAKER ARRESTED

THE embattled speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Ibrahim Salisu Buhari, was arrested on Thursday shortly after being forced by public pressure to resign from his post over allegations of age and certificate forgery. A police spokesman confirmed the speaker’s arrest in the interest of justice and tranquility, adding that the criminal investigation department was now handling the case. Buhari resigned in an emotive speech in the 469-member National Assembly. In a sharp constrast to his earlier posture not to quit, Buhari who could not hold back tears as he read his prepared speech, apologised for the distress he had caused the country.
