EASTERN Cape farmers are set for a natural high with the launch of a state-subsidised pilot hemp project at the Dohne Agricultural Institute outside Stutterheim by Agriculture Minister Thoko Didiza in the presence of multinational company representatives next Friday. Global sales of dagga’s non-narcotic cousin, with Europe demanding natural fibre and having no land for hemp harvesting, are predicted to reach R3 billion next year and the Eastern Cape hopes to generate 9000 jobs in Ciskei and Transkei when work begins in the first week of September. If the pilot project succeeds, state land will be made available for commercial farming next year.
