DURBAN PORT BACK ON TRACK

OPERATIONS at the Durban port appear to be back on track again after serious disruptions caused by the introduction of a new high-tech computer system which left goods rotting in containers at the harbour. Statistics presented by Portnet management at a meeting with the South African Chamber of Business (Sacob) in Johannesburg on Wednesday showed that performance levels at the port are slightly higher than those before the installation of the new computer system. The port handled a new record of 77000 containers in July. This is compared to 75000 containers handled last July. Portnet said it expects performance levels to increase as it begins to use the new system’s capabilities more fully.
