DUARTE DIPLOMATIC POSTING

FORMER Gauteng safety and security MEC Jessie Duarte has been appointed South Africa’s high commissioner to Mozambique. The posting was made by President Thabo Mbeki on Wednesday, and drew immediate criticism from opposition parties. Duarte resigned her MEC’s post in disgrace in 1998 following a scandal in which she crashed a government car while driving without a licence. Opposition parties complained the posting flies in the face of government pledges to root out corruption.
