THE Anglo-American Platinum Corporation (Amplats) has signed an agreement encouraging its employees to improve safety health conditions on its mines. The agreement which has been signed between the company and union representatives sets out to implement “zero tolerance towards unsafe acts or conditions.” The agreement is a two-way understanding between labour and management that has been a year in the making according to Amplats and is intended to cut down on deaths and injuries. The programme will narrow in on education and training plans focusing on developing a culture of responsibilty, said Amplats. The agreement was signed between Amplats and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), the Mineworkers Union (MWU), the Mouthpeace Workers Union (MPWU), the South African Electrical Workers Association (SAEWA), the United Associations of South Africa (UASA), the Federated Mineworkers Union (FMU) and the National Employees Trade Union (NETU).
