SOUTH Africa’s Amanda Coetzer was unceremoniously ejected from the US Open on Monday. Coetzer had been seeded sixth. Irina Spirlea of Romania, best known for bumping Venus Williams on a changeover in the 1997 U.S. semifinals, upset Coetzer in straight sets 6-1, 7-5. Spirlea made 31 unforced errors to 28 for Coetzer, but had 10 more winners than the South African, 14-4.
