NGENY SMASHES 1000m RECORD

KENYAN Noah Ngeny broke the world record for the men’s 1,000 meters on Sunday at the Italian Rieti Grand Prix II meet, clocking a time of 2 minutes, 11.96 seconds to smash a record that has stood for 18 years. Ngeny, silver medalist in the 1,500 at last month’s World Championhips, chopped 0.22 off the old record of 2:12.18, set by Sebastian Coe at Oslo, Norway, on July 11, 1981.
