THE conflict between African and Western values in Swaziland were put on trial this week when a sangoma filed a civil case against a neighbour who “insulted” her. Manzini-based sangoma Peggy Zwane is claiming R175000 in the High Court for defamation of character. She rejected the powers of the supernatural, and sought recourse in Western libel laws against former client John Dlamini. Zwane, in court papers, claims that Dlamini called her “a witch and prostitute” in 1997, and is claiming R175000 as compensation for damages and a tarnished reputation.
