NIGER’s CREDIT SUSPENDED

THE World Bank has suspended all its credits to Niger since September 14 after the impoverished west African country failed to honour a debt repayment, an informed source said Sunday. Niger could not repay $1.92-million due in July, the source said. Since Major Daouda Mallam Wanke took power after the April 9 assassination of President Ibrahim Bare Mainassara, Niger’s development partners, led by France, have suspended aid to insist on a return to democracy and an investigation into the killing. Wanke, who headed the presidential guard that gunned down the head of state, on Saturday went on state radio and television to open the campaign for presidential polls to be held on October 17. Since the end of July, Niger has no longer benefitted from structural adjustment assistance from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. For six months, the authorities in the mainly desert nation, which long has seen political turmoil, have made it clear that they face serious financial difficulties.
