SANCO CLAMPS DOWN ON COPS

THE South African National Civics Organisation, waging a controversial war on crime in the face of ineffective policing in East London’s Mdantsane township, has vowed to seize all police vans found outside shebeens and shopping centres. Sanco’s latest anti-crime drive, announced by publicity officer Mzwandile Buzani, involves driving the vans back to police stations after seizure from drinking spots or outside shopping centres and handing the keys over to Eastern Cape Safety and Transport MEC Dennis Neer. Sanco has also decided together with other community structures that shebeens, which it says are breeding grounds for rapes and robberies, will close at 9.30pm on weekdays and 10pm over weekends to deprive criminals of “breathing space”.
