CRASH CLAIMS TOP ZIM RUNNERS, COACH

FOUR of Zimbabwe’s top road runners and a leading athletics coach were killed in a car accident while on their way to an international event in Swaziland on Wednesday night, a sports official said Friday. Edward Siwela, secretary-general of the Amateur Athletics Association of Zimbabwe, said two other top athletes were injured in the crash on the road from the Zimbabwean capital Harare to the South African border. The runners killed in the crash were Stanford Chiyangwa, Cosmas Numwitike, Honest Dandara, Fungai Kapanyota, and coach Ray Haworth. Two other athletes, Debbie Lambourne, the current national women’s marathon champion, and Charles Magurira, were injured and admitted to hospital. The athletes were on their way to Mbabane in Swaziland to take part in Saturday’s Stanbic Swazi half-marathon.
