ALLAN Henning claimed his first Vodacom Senior Tour victory this year when he won the R140000 Vodacom Cadillac Classic by a comfortable three shots at the Glendower Golf Club on Saturday.
Henning was one of three leaders overnight together with Richard Lyon and Gabriel Putsoe, the leader on the Vodacom Senior Tour’s Order of Merit.
But the genial Henning sealed victory with a solid four-under par 68 in the final round for a 54-hole total of six-under par 210.
The former South African Open and South African Masters champion collected only one birdie on a front nine where he generally struggled to get below par.
Glendower’s back nine was, however, a little more forthcoming and Henning birdied the 12th and then eagled the par-five 13th to seal victory with a bogey-free round.
Lyon finished second on three-under 213 after a 71 in the final round, while Putsoe, who carded a 72, shared third place with European Seniors Tour campaigner, John Fourie, who returned a 71, on two-under 214.
The victory was particularly pleasing for Henning considering that he had not played a single round of tournament golf for roughly three months coming into this event.
“There just haven’t been enough tournaments to get a rhythm going. But I’m fortunate in that my swing seems to always hang around,” he said. –MWP
