HIT AND RUN DRIVER SHOOTS HIMSELF

AN unidentified driver shot himself in the head with an AK 47 rifle after shooting at policemen who stopped him following an accident in another town. Bushveld police spokesman Captain Blackie Swart, who reported the incident on Monday, said the man shot himself at about 11am on Saturday. Police stopped him at Nylstroom for allegedly causing an accident at Naboomspruit, 40km away. Swart said the man was driving a white BMW and apparently crashed into another car at Naboomspruit, but did not stop. Nylstroom police were alerted, and two officers at the entrance to the town stopped the BMW. The driver accelerated away but stopped 200 metres further on when the police pursued him, and got out of the car with an AK47. Swart said the man fired towards the policemen, who took cover. “Then the man shot himself in the head,” said Swart. He added that the BMW was stolen during an armed robbery in Randburg in September.
