A MILITARY tribunal sentenced three English-speaking separatists to life in prison for armed attacks in northwestern Cameroon, and gave lesser terms to about 35 others, judicial sources said on Wednesday. The prosecution had sought the death penalty against five of the defendents. Defence sources said the sentences were considered relatively clement “given the gravity of the charges and the prosecutor’s request.” The defendants were arrested in the English-speaking part of the mainly French-speaking country and charged in connection with armed attacks that left 10 people dead in 1997. The three defendants who were sentenced to life were convicted of stealing explosives, illegal ossession of firearms, arson, and destruction of property. They were also accused of being indirectly responsible for the 10 deaths.
