THE South African Rugby Football Union made just one mistake when they sent a letter to Newport demanding compensation for former Springbok captain Gary Teichmann — they sent it to the wrong Newport. Not content with stripping the number eight of the captaincy and dumping him unceremoniously from the World Cup squad, Sarfu are now trying to squeeze 20000 out of his new employers. But they will have to consult their map of Britain if they hope to recoup any of the money under the newly introduced regulation which gives a union the option of making a claim. Teichmann is playing for Newport in the Welsh first division but according to the Sarfu his stock has sunk so low that he now plays for Newport, an English amateur side competing in the little-known Midlands Two league. ”We were a little surprised when the letter arrived – 20000 is a lot of money and the letter’s tone was rather officious,” club official Gordon Wood told the Daily Telegraph.
