Lota puts Pirates in front

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Saturday 6.00pm.

A LACKLUSTRE Castle Premiership clash between Orlando Pirates and Kaiser Chiefs at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday was sparked by a classic goal by Pirates’ Dennis Lota fifteen minutes before the final whistle.

Lota dribbled past three defenders to gently slot the ball into an open goal.

Pirates took the game 1-nil worth three points.

Pirates have not beaten Chiefs in the league since the 1996/97 season.

Both sides kept a tight rein in defence and there were few moments when the forwards seemed to threaten the opposition goal. Except for the goal, not much troubled Chiefs’ keeper Brian Baloyi or opposite number William Okpara.

On and off the field, it was a clean game for most of the match, until a red card for Chief’s David Nyathi, who was sent off in the final moments, resulted in the Chief’s fans pelting the pitch with plastic bottles.

Pirates players were forced to stay on the pitch at the end of the game as the fans vented their anger by bombarding them with missiles and crackers.

It was another sad day for South frican soccer and it ended the last meeting between the two Soweto giants this century on a rather sour note.
