OWN CORRESPONDENT, Port Elizabeth | Sunday 5.20pm.
SOUTH Africa are 263 runs ahead at stumps of the fourth day of the second Test against England at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth after posting 189/4.
Jacques Kallis was the hero of the South African innings, showing great determination to reach 74 runs off 230 balls.
Kallis soaked up large amounts of punishment from the English seamers, particularly after he was caught by Chris Adams and given not-out by third umpire Dave Orchard.
The decision was a hard one, though, as the video evidence was not sufficient to give the bowler, Phil Tufnell, the decision.
The English bowlers had their tails up, and in the opening session and after lunch they bowled with real venom — something Kallis can attest to.
Jonty Rhodes is unbeaten on 35 and he and Kallis will take the field again on Monday.
The morning session proved to be disastrous for the home side as they lost three wickets cheaply.
England’s quicks struck hard and Gary Kirsten was dismissed for two, while Herschelle Gibbs was sent packing for 10.
Kirsten was caught by Michael Vaughan off the bowling of Darren Gough, while Gibbs was caught in the slips by Andrew Flintoff. Andy Caddick was the bowler.
Daryll Cullinan was bowled for 18 by Caddick, leaving South Africa reeling on 50/3 before skipper Hansie Cronje brought some order to the innings.
Cronje (27)played a solid innings before he was caught by Michael Vaughan after he foolishly played at a wide delivery on the off-stump from Andrew Flintoff and almost hit the ball down Vaughan’s throat.
The last England wicket to fall on Sunday morning was that of Andy Caddick who was bowled by Mornantau Hayward for 35 runs, bringing the England first innings to a close on 373 runs.
