PORTUGAL’S Carlos Sousa and his co-driver Joao Manuel Luz, seriously injured in the 13th stage of the Paris-Dakar rally arrived at a hospital in Paris on Thursday, medical officials said.
The two men were admitted to the Beaujon hospital after arriving on a medical plane from Tunisia.
The condition of the two competitors is considered as “serious” according to medical officials in Tunisia Wednesday, but an updated report is expected from the Paris hospital.
The accident took place 63 kilometres into the 13th stage between Waha and Khofra in Libya, with Sousa, 34 and Luz, 29 at the wheel of a Mitsubishi.
Two other Mitsubishis and a Nissan also came to grief one kilometre off the recommended route after tackling a sand dune at high speed, organisers said.
Six other competitors suffered various degrees of injuries and were given treatment at a hospital in Tunis. Race organisers said they will all be released shortly and sent home.
