Critical match for US Davis Cup team

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Harare | Saturday 4.00pm.

THE American Davis Cup team face a critical match against Zimbabwe on Saturday, after the teams tied one-all on the opening day of the tie in Harare.

Andre Agassi thrashed Wayne Black, but debutante Chris Woodruff was beaten by Black’s brother, Byron.

“Tomorrow is a very key match,” said US team skipper John McEnroe, on Friday.

Alex O’Brien and Rick Leach will meet Wayne Black and Kevin Ullyett in the doubles, and the winning side will have a 2-1 lead going into Sunday’s two reverse singles matches.

On Friday, Black demolished Woodruff, 7-5, 6-3, 7-5, leveling the home team 1-1 after Agassi beat Byron Black, 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-2.

Support for both the Blacks was earsplitting inside the 4000-seat City Sports Center, located in a Harare suburb.
