Title controversy as Bergman loses

DEON POTGIETER, Johannesburg | Monday 11.15am.

JAN Bergman was knocked out in the fourth round of his International Boxing Federation junior welterweight world title fight on Saturday in Connecticut.

He was dropped twice in the first round by the big hitting Zab Judah, but managed to come back and drop the American in the second.

Judah dominated the third and then stopped the valiant South African challenger the next round.

The title itself is in the middle of a growing controversy surrounding the IBF. Bergman and Judah were contesting the vacant junior welterweight world title after the former champion, Terronn Millett was stripped of it.

Millet is suing the IBF, insisting he be re-instated as champion. His title was taken from him after he suffered a broken hand, and was not medically able to defend it.

IBF president Hiawatha Knight has said that Judah can make his first defence against Millett. The champions share of the purse money however is 75% as opposed to the 25% the challenger receives.

Millett argues that he never lost his title, so should earn the bigger share of the purse if he’s to fight Judah.

Gary Murray was also stopped in the fourth round of his fight against the highly rated Shannon Taylor in Australia on Friday night.
