FLOODS THREATEN NAMIBIA’S MAIZE

FLOODING has destroyed part of Namibia’s irrigated maize crop in the south, but the country does not expect increased imports, an agricultural official said on Friday. Rains of up to 160 millimetres in the Hardap Dam’s catchment area filled the dam to 115% of capacity, leading to the sluice gates being opened and the flooding of farmlands downstream, said Jurgen Hoffmann at the Namibian Agronomic Board. “We have lost only about 2,500 tonnes in maize harvest at Hardap. But we expect a bumper harvest of 50000 tons from the northern triangle, the Caprivi region and other irrigation schemes,” Hoffmann said.
