ABERY HAS CADDIE TROUBLE

CADDIES often bare the brunt of golfing tempers, mostly when the errant shot has nothing to do with them. Sometimes, however, they really do mess up. Just ask Warren Abery. The Selbourne Country Club pro was mounting a brilliant comeback during the final round of the FNB Botswana Open, picking up six shots in the first ten holes to move from three-under par into a share of the lead at nine-under. Then he discovered his caddie attempting to lighten the load of Abery’s bag by removing his wallett and had no choice but to terminate his employment – with immediate effect. A new caddy was summoned to the bag but he, too, found the going hard and hopped onto the back of a television cameraman’s buggy for a ride down the 15th fairway, immediately incurring his player a two-shot penalty, a drop from second place to fifth and a loss of just over R15000 in prize money.
