ORGANISATION of African Unity Secretary General Salim Ahmed Salim, has appealed to world football’s governing body, Fifa, to let Africa host the 2006 World Cup.
“The case for Africa is overwhelming,” Salim told a meeting of African ambassadors in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa on Monday night.
Salim declined to endorse either the bid of South Africa or Morocco — both of whom have applied to host the cup, saying: “It doesn’t matter which African country is hosting the game, what matters is that it should be held in Africa.”
The decision to award the World Cup will be made by Fifa in Zurich on July 6. The other bidding countries are England, Germany and Brazil.
