SOUTH African opening batsman Herschelle Gibbs admitted on Tuesday that he partied in a nightclub until 3am on Friday morning before going out for five runs to the Australian pace attack in the second one-day international at Newlands. According to the Cape Argus, Gibbs partied the night away at the West End jazz club in Athlone hours before he was supposed to face the Australian fast-bowlers. South Africa’s batsmen failed to spark in the match and they ended their innings on 144/9, losing to the Australians by five wickets. Gibbs told the Argus that: “I don’t have anything further to say. I was at the nightclub and it has nothing to do with anybody else.” South African cricket’s convenor of selectors, Rushdie Magiet commented on the incident by saying that management doesn’t impose curfews before matches. Staff at the nightclub said that Gibbs and two friends left the nightclub at about 3am. Gibbs and the rest of the national cricket team were present at a cocktail party earlier in the evening where, according to the Argus, Gibbs appeared uneasy after he was linked to the allegations of match-fixing surrounding former skipper Hansie Cronje. Gibbs said after the Newlands match that he was stunned after being implicated in the betting scandal.
