SERGEANT Barnabas “Rogers” Jabila, a hitman for late Nigerian military ruler General Sani Abacha, has admitted killing the wife of late politician Moshood Abiola. Kudirat Abiola was assassinated on a Lagos road in June 1996 by men suspected to be members of a killer squad set up by Abacha, who died in June 1998 after ruling Nigeria for four and a half years. Jabila is a star prosecution witness in an attempted murder case involving former army chief Ishaya Bamaiyi and four others, accused of trying to kill former internal affairs minister and publisher Alex Ibru, also in 1996. Jabila admitted on Thursday that he fired the bullet that killed Kudirat on June 4, 1996 on the orders of Abacha’s former security officer Major Hamzat al-Mustapha. He said that as a soldier, he was acting on orders from his superiors.
