FAIRHEAD MURDER TRIAL STARTS

THE trial starts on Monday of three suspects accused of abducting, raping and finally murdering a Brenda Fairhead and her 11-year-old daughter, Kia, near Port Alfred. The Cape Town women disappeared in January this year after an angling outing at the Fish River mouth. Three weeks have been set aside for the High Court trial, which will be heard at a special session at Port Alfred. Mr. Justice Joop Labuchagne of Johannesburg will preside since Brenda Fairhead was the sister of an Eastern Cape judge. The accused are two brothers of 21 and 22 years, Zolani and Bongani Tom, as well as a 17-year-old whose identity is protected by the law. He will be tried as an adult. The state has called 43 witnesses, including Nigel Fairhead, who lost his child and wife.
