FIFTEEN KILLED IN NIGERIAN VIOLENCE

AT least 15 people have been killed in a communal clash in southwest Nigeria as the West African country sinks deeper into crisis. According to Nigerian press reports, the violence on Monday in Owo in southwest Ondo State reflects a long-running struggle between factions laying rival claims to the traditional post of headman of the town. “No fewer than 15 people were killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed in the clash,” the majority state-owned Daily Times said. Rioters also destroyed the tomb of Adekunle Ajasin, the former leader of military opposition group, the National Democratic Coalition who died in 1997 fighting the brutal military regime of the late General Sani Abacha.
