A BEAMING Archbishop Desmond Tutu returned home to Cape Town on Thursday, saying he planned to sleep and leave the public spotlight to younger leaders. He was in top form, going down on his knee to tie a photographer’s shoelace and hugging supporters who arrived at the airport to greet him. “It’s great to be back. This is home,” he said. Tutu said although his surgery for prostate cancer in November last year had been successful, his recovery had been slower than expected. “I am a great deal more decrepit than I was two years ago,” he giggled. “I want to come home to sleep. We have a cadre of outstanding new leaders. We oldies, certainly I, should give them space to show off their worth. It is now time I move away from centre stage. I really don’t want to travel any more, except under the most pressing circumstances.” Tutu, who chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, said he had been assured by President Thabo Mbeki that apartheid-era victims would be adequately compensated.
