SA SELLING ARMS TO PAKISTAN

SOUTH Africa has sold arms and ammunition to Pakistan despite announcing a freeze last October after a military coup led to the country’s suspension from the Commonwealth, a government official said. ”These were signed contracts. Due to the nature of the arms being sold, it was decided to allow the contracts to be completed,” said Alan Taylor, an adviser to the government’s National Arms Control Committee. In a written reply to a parliamentary question, the government said it had sold R44m worth of category ”A” arms (which includes artillery, automatic weapons, tanks, missiles and bombs) to Pakistan since army general Pervez Musharraf ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif in a bloodless coup 10 months ago. – Reuters
