SABC, REUTERS SUBPOENAED AGAIN

SOUTH Africa’s elite Scorpions police unit has served subpoenas on the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) and Reuters news agency to obtain raw video footage on the murder of alleged gangster Rashied Staggie. National directorate for public prosecutions spokesman Sipho Ngwema said when the directorate raided the offices of the state-run SABC, Reuters and Associated Press last month looking for footage of the 1996 murder of Cape Town gang leader Staggie, they did not find all the material. “They’re not co-operating, that is why we have to subpoena them.” Staggie was shot and set alight by an angry crowd of vigilantes. Images of the incident were captured by photographers and television news teams. A representative of the National Editors’ Forum who said it deplored the subpoenas. – AFP
