WATERPUMPS that are turned by children playing on roundabouts will be installed in 120 rural communities in South Africa, the inventor of the system said this week. Roundabout Outdoor director Trevor Field signed an agreement with the Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry, Ronnie Kasrils, and the US Kaiser Family Foundation this week to install 120 of these “playpumps” in several of the country’s nine provinces. Once water officials have established there is sufficient, safe water in the area, boreholes are drilled and the roundabout system is assembled. When children play on it, water is pumped up a tower into a 3000-litre tank. Kaiser agreed to sponsor 60 playpumps as long as their donation, worth about R2,4m, was matched by other funders- AFP
