Requiem soundtrack gains momentum

As the film Requiem for a Dream continues to attract wider audiences and critics’ attention around the country, so does the soundtrack continue to find new fans, thanks to the work of composer Clint Mansell, in collaboration with Kronos Quartet and Bang on a Can’s David Lang.

Mansell was recently awarded best Original Score from the Online Film Critics Society (the film was also ranked # 2 of Top 10 Films by that organisation, and was given Best Director, Best Actress and Best Editing awards). This marks the second collaboration between Clint Mansell and director Darren Aronofsky, the acclaimed director of the 1997 film Ð, a partnership that has been unusually effective.

As Time Out has noted, “The collaboration between Aronofsky and Clint Mansell [for Ð] was a particularly inspired one, Mansell’s oppressive electronics complementing the movie’s black-and-white, suffocating universe. Mansell was called back to work on Aronofsky’s new movie, Requiem for a Dream and the result is even more impressive.” Mansell’s score for the film serves to intensify the wide range of emotions that permeate the film.

The film, starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly and Marlon Wayans, was featured on the year-end Top 10 lists of over 150 film critics around the country. Ellen Burstyn was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the film, and was recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Board of Review, along with Best Actress awards from the Boston, Florida, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Kansas City and South Eastern film critics associations.

A remix project based on Requiem for a Dream is due this Autumn on Thrive Records (London/Sire), and will include remixes by Paul Oakenfold, Hive, A Guy Named Gerald, Photek, Perry Farrell and more.

Requiem For A Dream is available on CD nationwide. The film opens in South African cinemas on the March 16 through Ster
