THE UN’s special envoy on human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo has confirmed that a former rebel leader who helped Laurent Kabila seize power in Congo had been executed as rumoured last year. Anselme Masasu Nindaga, who helped overthrow dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for treason in November 1997, released in March last year under a general amnesty but re-arrested in November. – Reuters
