PRISONERS TO GROW, EAT VEGGIES

THE national department of correctional services has started vegetable projects in prisons all over the country to save costs on prison food. It costs R94,16 cents a day to feed each of South Africa’s 163_000 prisoners at about 238 prisons – amounting to R15,3m a day, said department representative Andrew Aphane. Aphane said the department would also continue releasing prisoners awaiting trial for petty crime, on bail of less than R1 000. – African Eye News Service
