MANDELA, NASPERS LAUNCH INTERNET CENTRES

FORMER president Nelson Mandela and media company Naspers will launch two internet technology centres in the Karoo towns of Calitzdorp and Carnarvon on Thursday. Both towns will each receive an internet technology centre. Calitzdorp was identified by the Department of Health as one of the most underprivileged towns in South Africa. Each centre has been stocked with 25 computers, linked via satellite to the internet. Centre staff, hailing from the communities, will receive training in both business administration and Internet education. During the day the centres will be used for school support. Pupils from schools in the area will have free access to use all the facilities. After hours, each centre will double-up as an adult education facility to help people in the community become computer and internet literate.
