DEBY TAKES CHAD?

INCUMBENT Chadian President Idriss Deby is well ahead of the other candidates and will be elected in the first round, his party, the Salvation Patriotic Movement and its allies told a press conference in Ndjamena on Thursday. The party officials told journalists that Deby had reportely won seven of the eight districts of the capital city Ndjamena and is in the lead in all the districts in the northern part of the country. He has also won many votes in the south, the stronghold of opposition parties. Deby’s challenger there is the federalist candidate Ngarledji Yorongar. The party said that Deby would win the polls in the first round with 65% to 70% of the votes. On Wednesday, opposition leaders called a news conference during which they threatened to file petitions against what they termed as massive fraud in some areas. Four days after the polls, the Independent National Electoral Committee has not yet received all the documents necessary for the release of the partial results. Results are expected on Sunday. – Pana
