MORE AID NEEDED FOR NIGERIA?S DISPLACED

THE Nigerian Red Cross said Monday it is planning to send more aid to tens of thousands of people displaced by unrest in the central and north Nigeria. More than 50_000 people have fled their homes in Nasarawa State, in central Nigeria, since mid-June because of fighting between Tiv and other ethnic groups, according to the agency. More than 22_000 more have fled their homes in Bauchi State, in the north of the country, in the past few weeks because of fighting between Muslims and Christians there. The fighting in Bauchi was sparked on June 19 by an argument over the imposition of Islamic Sharia law in the state, which is split between Muslim and Christian populations. Media reports last week said more than 25_000 people had fled their homes in central Taraba State to escape ethnic fighting spilling over from Nasarawa. – AFP
