ZAMBIAN PRESIDENT’S ALLY DEFECTS TO OPPOSITION

ZAMBIAN President Frederick Chiluba’s electoral campaign chief has defected to the newly-formed opposition Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD), the latter’s party chairman said on Wednesday. Paul Tembo was deputy secretary general of the governing Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) and was campaign manager for Chiluba’s controversial third term re-election bid. ”He came to see me last weekend. What I can say is that Paul Tembo is now with us,” FDD chairman Simon Zukas told a news conference. The defection of Tembo, who also spearheaded Chiluba’s campaign for re-election in the 1996 general polls, is seen as a major political setback for the embattled leader. Tembo lost by one vote to Enoch Kavindele when he stood as Chiluba’s vice president in party elections in April. – AFP
