EDUCATION minister Kader Asmal’s Working Group for the National Institute for Higher Education has called for submissions for a university to be established in Mpumalanga. The submissions should identify programmes and skills that need to be developed in the province, including the role that the existing education infrastructure such as colleges could play. NEIGHBOURS HOUND WOMAN TO ATTEMPT SUICIDE
AN Egyptian woman (19) threw herself from the fourth floor of a Cairo building rather than face scandal arising from her being discovered in her boyfriend’s apartment, the daily al-Ahram said Thursday. The young girl was with her 22-year-old boyfriend, a student and computer salesman, in his house in the main Sunni Muslim neighbourhood of al-Azhar, when neighbours guessed she was there and started banging loudly on the door to make her leave the premises, the paper said. Panic-stricken, the young girl hurled herself through the window but survived the fall, and passers-by took her to hospital, the paper said. Free sexual relations are not allowed by Islam. – AFP
13-YEAR-OLD RAPED
TWO unknown men raped a 13-year-old girl who was collecting firewood with three friends in Northern Province on Wednesday evening. The two men chased away the teenager’s friends at about 6pm and cornered the girl, who lives in Tshikuni village near Louis Trichardt, said Far North police spokesman Captain Ailwei Mushavhanamadi on Thursday. No arrests have been made. Meanwhile, police at Dzanani village near Louis Trichardt are searching for two men who raped two women who were walking along a footpath in Raliphaswe village. – African Eye News
