David Helfgott, the legendary pianist whose life was immortalised in the Oscar Award-winning film Shine, is in South Africa.

This Australian piano virtuoso showed extraordinary talent from an early age. He won various competitions in Australia and went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London. His tutor likened him to Vladimir Horowitz, both technically and in temperament.

In his life he conquered many odds he overcame great personal obstacles and a most unfortunate mental breakdown at an early age that almost destroyed his career and stopped him becoming one of the world’s greatest pianists.

Helfgott will perform at the Old Mutual Auditorium, Unisa, Pretoria on September 8 and 9. To celebrate his tour Friday is giving away five Helfgott CDs. To win, e-mail the title of any Helfgott recording to [email protected] before September 12.
